Question:
What are some "introductory country artists" I can listen to to get over my hate of country music?

I'm looking for some contemporary country music that isn't too banjos-and-cowboys deep south kinda stuff. I think I need to get over my country-fearing problem. Hate is hate, even if it's a genre of music. Please assist!

what would help you to understand is to research and learn! there would be no music today as we know it! folk country r&b ,country western and rock all started with good old country music, which is made up from irish-english-scot-german-italian- influence when our country was forming into what we have today! you know i'd bet you would really enjoy a week in nashville just to do research and sight seeing.i also forgot to mention blue grass music, the rock and grit of our heritage. if this approach is not right for you, then try K T OSLIN, VINCE GILL, JIM REEVES AND THE GREAT RAY PRICE, for the more refined styles of country music. ray price has an amazing voice for the years he has been around, most proffesional of all >

that's all the bubblegum country I can think of. Some true country artists are: Tanya Tucker, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Randy Rogers Band, Hank Jr. Hank Sr. Garth Brooks, and Conway Twitty.

With the wording of your question, it seems your prejudice is too deeply ingrained to be alleviated. Further, not wanting to hear "cowboys" (which is western, not country) and "deep south kinda stuff" is almost like saying, "I want to hear heavy metal, but no loud guitars or screaming vocals kind of stuff." What's the purpose? Someone can pass that ridiculous Pat Boone CD of a few years ago off to you as "heavy metal," but that doesn't make it true to the genre, anymore than proposing to listen to pop fluff or rock that is mislabeled "country" is true to that genre.

Be honest with yourself: listen to Hank Williams. If you don't like him, you won't like COUNTRY music.

And, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. You don't feel a need to overcome a dislike of liver & onions, do you?
