Question:
Is Dolly Parton or Elvis Presley the best singer ever ?
2013-09-17 03:58:00 UTC
I can kind of understand how people could say Dolly Parton is the best singer ever but how can Elvis Presley be compared to Dolly Parton ?
He never even wrote one song and most of his songs were daggy and I only know of old grannies that listen to his music these days.
Besides the fact of his unsavoury personal life with drugs and dying on his toilet I just can't see why people think he is in Dolly Parton's league.
Perhaps he had four or five decent songs in his career but there are sooooo many better singers than Elvis Presley.
Is it a case of people over the years being brainwashed into thinking Elvis Presley is better than he was ?
I just find him to be sooooo daggy and I cringe when I hear his silly songs like Hound Dog and yeah blue shoes and Teddy Bear song and stuff.
My Grandma listens to his music and people laugh at her.

My own opinion is Dolly is a far better singer than Elvis. Statistically Dolly has had more success on the charts having more top 10's and no.1's than Elvis. But for the record I don't think a persons personal life has or should have anything to do with the talent they had. Elvis, in his time, was widely promoted and girls swooned over him which I'm sure were big boosts to his popularity. Elvis revolutionized music in the 1950's for which he does deserve credit regardless if you happen to like him or his music.

First of all, you pose a question asking who is the best SINGER then go off track by talking about SONGWRITING, a completely different category. I could talk about Elvis as an actor, but that would be off topic.

Although Dolly Parton is without doubt a great singer, her repertoire is limited to country/pop songs, whereas Elvis with his 3 octavage range could sing country, pop, ballads, rock, blues, gospel, even semi opera. He is in four Halls of Fame, and is the best selling artist (single or band) in the world. Certainly has sold a lot more than Ms Parton. He still earns more per annum than her, even though he has been dead for over 35 years. His home in Mempis has just been voted the 2013 #1 Iconic American Attraction. Does anyone know where Dolly Parton came from?

Let's see whether anyone remembers Dolly Parton 40 years after her death.

Without a shadow of a doubt Elvis Presley was the greatest singer/entertainer of the 20th Century. He had a great range and sang in virtually every musical genre available to him. Dolly is mainly a country singer and therefore her repertoire somewhat limited. Seems like the general public also believe Elvis to be the greatest singer as he is simply the biggest solo selling recording artist of all-time. Further, Dame Kiri Te Kanewa, the New Zealand born opera singe,r thought that the 'early Elvis' had the greatest voice ever. By the way, I also really like Dolly.

My opinion would be both! I really can't say! U right u can't compare or contrast the two because they are individuals, but I listen to both of them! They both were poor, country, born in Jan, great singers, movie stars, have beautiful house, had a trademark etc. I have to go with both because simply they both can be good in different ways! Like u said Dolly is way more talented because she created her own songs, but Elvis was too because he first invented rock and roll

Singing is something that everybody can learn and improve. Of course, some are more naturally skilled than others, but even a poor voice can be overcome by dedication, practice, and more practice. Even if you're content to sing in the shower, there are some things you can do to improve your voice. This is probably the best online course to improve your singing skills https://tr.im/0bdt8

.....Very interesting question. Both have very good styling and both have done many great songs. To call either of them the best would do no justice to either.

Dolly has made a living with he songs of the mountain folks and to reach the common man.

Where as Elvis took the route to sing songs geared to the younger audiences.

Both deserve the titles best singer ever , but to give to one is to do no justice to the other. Each is best in their style.

Personally, I do not think that either Dolly or Elvis is the best singer ever. Neither would be in my top ten!

Get serious! I can think of a million better singers than both of them. Neither wrote their own songs, either. Do you see either of them on the democratically voted upon lists below?

Well, your question is singer, so Elvis.
