Every country fan knows that there's a difference between modern and classic country music. I'm only 19 and the music I grew up listening to is already being played in classic country playlists on radios and such.

What do you consider good classic country music? i.e. artists/bands, songs, ect.

What are some of your favorite artists, both modern and classic.

The lists bellow are some of my favorites and make up a list of what I believe are the best in these categories. They are in no particular order.

Classic:

Hank Williams

Roy Acuff

Mel Tillis

Patsy Cline

Loretta Lynn

Rose Maddox

Willie Nelson

Johnny Paycheck

Charlie Daniels Band

David Alan Coe

Waylon Jennings

Johnny Cash

Jessi Colter

These artists made country music. They defined it. Hank Williams, Roy Acuff and others in the Grand Ole' Opre took country music form the cowboy songs and backwoods shanties to the main stream and made it into a country wide sensation. These other artists followed their precedent. They told stories with their music and made a lasting impression on music which can still be seen and felt today.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Modern:

Alan Jackson

River Country

Toby Kieth

George Strait

Reba McIntire

Rodney Atkins

Josh Turner

Jamey Johnson

Garth Brooks

Alabama

Lonestar

Brooks & Dunn

Diamond Rio

All of these singers in the modern section have really stuck to the country foundations set by the classics above. The song styles, and story telling aspects of country are present in most of their works. They have a more classic and traditional sound to their music which can be traced back to different elements in the songs and styles of the Classic Country stars above.

***As for "Pop Country" I've listed that below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pop Country:

Keith Urban

Taylor Swift

Miranda Lambert

Kenny Chesney

Rascall Flats

Lady Antebellum

Big & Rich

Emerson Drive

These groups and singers are changing the face of country. Bringing in elements of different styles; Island, rock, rap/hip-hop, & "pop". This is its own style separate form the two categories above because it is country at the core and the artists have adapted it to the ever changing face of today's music in other genre's.

The classics to me, are the ones that build the foundation of Country Music.

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton.

And then you get into what the modern country people call classics, Alabama, Keith Whitley, Tanya Tucker, etc... Though they are great, they're not exactly purely classic country.
