I am a new Johnny Cash fan. I have a couple of different greatest hits CDs. I am wondering now what are his best non greatest hits albums/ CDs. Any suggestions?

To be honest I would start to collect them and get them all, their all good. Ive listened to Johnny Cash my whole life and I still listen to him every day, I never get tired of him. But starting off get Live at San Quentin and Live at Folsom. And I agree with everyone saying get the Complete Sun recordings, They are really good. Youll not be disappointed.

Don't overlook any of the recordings he made late in life, that is, the various "American Recordings" releases ("American V" is a personal fave). These are, put simply, Cash at his very best/most moving. Also worth checking out is "Personal File,' a 2 CD release from a few years back of previously-unreleased material from the early 70s through mid 80s.

There's a box set that has everything he recorded for Sun. That is a must-have.
"Bitter Tears" is the best Columbia-era album.
"Johnny Cash is Coming to Town" is from the Mercury era and very good.
The first "American Recordings" ("Cash") is another must-have.
Welcome aboard!

Hopefully you have Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison
that one is a no brainer.
