Question:
Some original Johnny Cash songs?
2015-10-10 15:20:24 UTC
I've heard a few of his most popular songs (like Ring of Fire, Hurt, I Walk the Line) and I love them. I want to hear more Johnny Cash songs but I'm finding that he does a lot of covers. I just want to hear his originals for now, but I can't tell which ones are covers and which ones are original. And google hasn't been any help. It'd be really helpful to have a list of his original songs. Thank you!

One thing about Johnny Cash. He was from a time when "covers" were an accepted part of everyone's performance. "Standards" they were called.

BTW, Johnny didn't write Ring of Fire, that was written by June Carter. Hurt was written by Tent Reznor.

Here is a list of Johnny Cash written songs:

"Originally performed by" is overrated.

Which do you prefer:

"Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails (original) or Johnny Cash (cover)

"Rolling Down The River" Creedence (original) or Tina Turner (cover)

"Blood Stained Banders" by Jimmy Struthers or its cover "Good Shepherd" by Jefferson Airplane.

Bob Dylan is famous for writing songs that sound better when performed by other people. So is Tom Paxton. So is June Carter.

Johnny recorded his last song "Hurt" right before he died, on September 12th 2003. If you go to your home page and google "Original Johnny Cash songs" you will probably find all kinds of songs.

Actually, Ring of Fire was not written by him; it was written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore.

"Some original Johnny Cash songs?"

Here are some original songs written in full, or in part, and recorded by Johnny Cash. However Ring of Fire, as recorded by Johnny Cash was actually a cover, as at the time, it was recorded originally by Anita Carter June Carter's sister.

“Cry! Cry! Cry!”

"Country Boy"

"So Doggone Lonesome"

"There You Go"

"Don't Make Me Go"

"Train of Love"

"Next in Line"

"Home of the Blues""

"Big River"

"A Certain Kinda Hurtin'"

"Sons of Katie Elder"

"Little at a Time"

"All Over Again"

"Smiling Bill McCall"

"The Matador"

"Send a Picture of Mother"

"Run Softly, Blue River"

"Frankie's Man, Johnny"

"I Still Miss Someone"

"Don't Take Your Guns to Town"

"Pickin' Time"

"The Gifts They Gave" *(Christmas)

"Here Was a Man" (Christmas)

"We Are the Shepherds" (Christmas)

"Who Kept the Sheep" (Christmas)

"You Beat All I Ever Saw"

"Put the Sugar to Bed"

"Girl in Saskatoon"

"Time and Time Again"

"Locomotive Man"

"Bandana"

"I'll Remember You"

"Five Feet High and Rising"

"I Got Stripes"

"Frankie's Man Johnny"

"A Certain Kinda Hurtin'"

"Mean as Hell"

"Happiness is You"

"When I've Learned Enough to Die"

"I'd Still Be There"

"What Do I Care"

"I Still Miss Someone"

"Forty Shades of Green"

"The Big Battle"

"You Remembered Me"

"Sing It Pretty, Sue"

Those I've listed are but a fraction of what Johnny Cash wrote or collaborated on, and that he recorded. Johnny Cash was also a master cover artist.
