I'm wondering whether she ran away from her husband/boyfriend or if she commited suicide.

She is leaving her abusive Boyfriend or husband and making a life for herself....It is about her making a new life after being told she was worthless and not useful...after being treated badly she is still able to make it and get away from this abuser

The song is about how she was emotionally abused and finally decided to leave him so she wouldn't have to endure the pain any longer..

On M's website under FAQ she explained about it..

This is what she said

What happens to the woman at the end of "A Broken Wing"?

This is what Martina had to say in the fan club newsletter: "And if anybody asks, you can tell them that no, she didn't jump out the window!! That thought never crossed my mind until someone asked me that after they had heard the song...to me the song is about this woman's unbreakable spirit, and I always thought she just left, and the window and the curtains were symbolic of her "flying away" and finding her freedom. I talked with the writers and that's definitely what they had in mind when they wrote the song."

Hope that helps... =)

A woman was beaten and abused by her boyfriend/husband, and she finally gets the strength to leave him. She in a sense has a "broken wing" and she mends it and she gives herslef the strength to get over the memories and the torment he has given her.

She ran away from her husband. To me a ''broken wing'' is symbolic to a person who has been emotionally abused and brought down by others negativity toward them and causing them to have low self esteem.

Most songs are open to interpretation, but that song just means that she finally got the nerve to walk away. She's broken, but she's going to make it.

The line at the end about the open window and the curtains blowing in the breeze makes me think that the woman died at the end - possibly by jumping from the window.
