Growing up, I listened to classic rock, such as Badfinger and the Beatles, and Christian rock, such as Petra. Then, later on down the road, I started listening to heavier rock, such as Cinderella, Tesla, etc. and, eventually, I started listening to classic and modern country music. Now, I'll even listen to some bluegrass.
Of course, I wasn't raised on anything really other than classic rock. I mean, my grandparents on my mother's side only listened to country and nothing else. Then, back in 2004, my grandfather (on my mom's side) died and about a year after that, I first started listening to country. I really started when I heard Keith Urban play guitar. That guy can play some great guitar. Then, a while later, I heard Brad Paisley play guitar and he's 20 times better at guitar than Urban is. I later started listening to some older artists including Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Reed. I really love Jerry Reed's and Chet Atkins' guitar playing. They're both two amazing old-time country guitarists.
Then, just a few weeks ago, I was on YouTube searching for mandolin, since I just started playing mandolin after playing guitar for about six years, and came across a video of a bluegrass trio performing in Texas somewhere. On mandolin, was a 17-year-old girl named Sarah Jarosz (go to http://www.myspace.com/sarahjarosz if you want to hear how great of a musician she is). That's really when I started listening to some bluegrass because that young girl can play mandolin, clawhammer banjo and guitar really well. Her fiddler is also an amazing musician and he's only about 17 as well. All three of them are amazing musicians.
Anyway, I've gone on long enough. Basically, the fact that I play guitar and that the four best-selling genres (rock, blues, jazz, country--first came blues, then country/bluegrass, then jazz and then rock...of course, Celtic music also influenced country and bluegrass a bit and jazz may have been around a bit before country and bluegrass, but I'm not 100% sure) are all connected led me to starting to listen to a bit of everything.
And, seriously--most people from Connecticut won't grow up on country music. Also, my CD collection ranges from stuff by Badfinger and George Harrison (classic rock) to stuff by Buddy Guy and Jim Byrnes (blues) to Scorpions, Tesla, Cinderella, Ratt and White Lion (80's metal) to Wes Montgomery (jazz--and I only have an actual vinyl record by Montgomery...not a CD) to Jerry Reed, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Keith Anderson, Dierks Bentley, Ricky Skaggs, Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, Big & Rich, Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, George Strait, Jake Owen, Travis Tritt, Tracy Byrd and a whole lot more country artists--classic and modern.
