Music of all sorts has been a huge part of my life since I was a little one but country is one genre I've generally strayed from, probably because I live in the south and am surrounded by people that listen to and radio stations that play nothing but texas-tinged pop garbage. I'm a pretty diverse and open listener but my listening as far as actual country goes only stretches so far as some of Neil Young's work and the Grateful Dead's occasional veering into the genre and their covers of old standards like Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" which is what actually got me sort of interested in this direction, and

anyway, my collection so far is pretty limited

johnny cash - at folsom prison
johnny cash - at san quentin
merle haggard - mama tried
hank williams' song "hey good lookin'"

i'd love some willie nelson and more johnny cash
since I know bluegrass and folk will inevitably come up, here's what i got as far as that goes

o brother where art thou soundtrack
old & in the way - s/t and a few early 70s live records
compilation by the name of "appalachian stomp"
most of the folk i have is 60s stuff by the way of bert jansch, john fahey, nick drake, dylan, etc

Old Crow Medicine Show is a modern bluegrass band that's really good, you have to listen to the song "Wagon Wheel".

The Avett Brothers are another modern band, less rustic though and more fusion with rock.

I'm pretty much a beginner in country too, so this is all I've got.

Albums, "classic country" - wow. OK, let me think on albums....Truthfully, one of the best albums is probably "Wanted: The Outlaws" with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jessi Colter.

Razzy Bailey - "Makin' Friends" is one I go back to pretty often because I like it a lot.

Dottie West - "High Times"

Exile - "Kentucky Hearts" - I think I play this one as much as any I own

Statler Brothers - "Entertainers On And Off The Road" (I love "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine")

Gene Watson - "Memories To Burn" - Love the title song

Waylon's live album is excellent.

you might give Dale Watson a try, you can find him on youtube.com

also you'll find other independent artists there.
